This vacation we decided to do something different. We visited Merida, the Capital of the Yucatan. Rather than rent a Booked a tour to the Sian Kaa'n Biosphere through the TSA. The tour was great, our guide Toby was very informative. I was Another wonderful trip! And a thanks to Bill for sharing some of his info to help in my planning.
vehicle, we chose travelling by bus. Spent our first night in a $30 room in Playa, went to the bus station before they closed
and purchased our tickets ($17). The bus left on time at 8:30am the next morning. It was full, so we were glad to have
purchsed our tickets in advance. The ride was nonstop, a little over 4 hours, and very comfortable.
Merida is a very busy town, glad that we were not driving! We stayed in the Casa Mexilio, it was great! Very affordable,
quiet, also included a terrific breakfast! This was located within walking distance to the public square, where all the shops
and marvelous old buildings are. On Sunday they close all the streets near the square and have special vendors selling their
wares, and free music and entertainment all day. We also visited the Museum of Anthropology on Sunday (free), the building
itself is awesome! and the artifacts were very neat, as they came form all of the Mayan sites that we had visited over the
years. We had purchsed our return bus pass on the day we arrived. We stayed in Merida for two nights, and that was just
enough - anxious to get back to the coast. Back in Akumal, we stayed in the Vista Del Mar, have stayed ther before, very
affordable, close to everything for walking. As usual the stay in the area was great. Getting closer to buying every time we
come down. Surprized at the boats in Half Moon Bay and Dive Shop! Glad to hear about the Pier is not a happening thing!
surprized that the tour was not being given by the "Friends of the Sian Kaa'an". I thought they were the only ones allowed to
boat in the area, giving tours. This was a new tour operation. They seemed up & up, and their first prioirity was the
preservation for a natural reserve. The area is huge, and very amazing! So glad that it has been preserved. Saw many
beautiful birds, a Mayan structure just being restored, and got to swim in some cool clear water.
