We just got back from Akumal - our first trip. You'll love it if you stay there. You really missed a wonderful beach at Xcacel - cost us $2 US/person and the guard gave us each fresh coconuts to drink as we were leaving. Fabulous snorkeling right off the beach (go to the left facing the beach for the calmest water). We'll try the one you described at Xpu-Ha next time.
